Where and How to Update Your Address When Moving

An Easy Checklist for Updating Your Address

Moving to a new home is exciting—but amidst the packing and planning, don’t forget one crucial step: updating your address. Missing this step can lead to missed bills, important documents, and even legal trouble. Here’s a quick guide on where and how to update your address so nothing slips through the cracks.

1. Start with the USPS
First, head to the official USPS change of address site at moversguide.usps.com. This forwards your mail to your new home for 12 months (magazines and periodicals for 60 days). It’s fast, easy, and costs just $1.10 for identity verification.

2. Update Your Address with the DMV
If you’ve moved within the same state, most DMVs allow you to update your address online. If you moved out of state, you’ll need to get a new driver’s license and vehicle registration—typically within 30 days of moving. Visit your state’s DMV website for specific requirements.

3. Notify Your Financial Institutions
Banks, credit card companies, and lenders all need your updated address to send statements, new cards, or tax forms. Log into your online banking account or call their customer service lines to update your information.

4. Inform Your Employer
Make sure your HR department has your new address so they can send tax forms (like W-2s), benefits documents, or other important notices.

5. Update Your Address with the IRS
You can notify the IRS by completing Form 8822 or by including your new address on your next tax return. If you’ve already filed for the year, submitting Form 8822 is the best route.

6. Don’t Forget These Common Services:
Utilities: Gas, electric, water, trash

Cell phone provider

Internet and cable providers

Streaming services

Subscriptions (magazines, meal kits, etc.)

Online shopping accounts (Amazon, eBay, etc.)

Medical offices and insurance companies

Schools and alumni associations

7. Friends and Family
It seems obvious, but it’s easy to forget: send a quick text, email, or even a fun moving announcement card to friends and family so they don’t send mail to your old place.

Final Tip: Create a checklist and set aside an hour or two during moving week to handle all your address updates. A little effort now saves a lot of headaches later.
